Creating a high fidelity, aesthetically pleasing top down game using modern 3D techniques

By Adrian Cathie

abstract

The aim of this project was the deliver a game artefact that used the format of early Nintendo top-down adventure games. The focus was on the aesthetic of the piece, including the architecture, asset design and lighting.

There had to be a consistent visual language that remained anchored to certain design concepts but also remained interesting. The project would not rely on game mechanics or ‘being fun’, but rather on the visual appeal of the environment; in this way, this is more of a virtual environment one can explore and admire, rather than a playable game.
