abstract

Two dimensional animation has been around for many years. Early examples include Snow White up to current day blockbusters such as The Lion King and The Emperor’s New Groove. They have all been very successful films, sporting some extremely good animation. The development of 3D animation has produced some amazing new films such as Toy Story leading the way forward. What is interesting is when the two mediums are mixed. Recent examples of this are notably displayed in The Prince of Egypt. The outstanding effects include both 2D and 3D elements, which depend on each other to work convincingly. The 3D provides the complexity and the 2D gives the touch of style need to pull that particular sequence off.

Two-dimensional animation has some great qualities that are lost when taken to 3D. 2D has a sense of fun, and fluidity to it. Often it is required to exaggerate the movements of a character to such an extent that by looking at it frame by frame you wonder what the character is actually doing, but when view in full motion the character is moving with class and style. 3D takes a much more realistic stance, where more cartoon animation is often toned down to a more realistic style. What I would like to do is take 3D animation and use 2D techniques to improve it. Improvements can be made in terms of changing the animation’s timing, removing the accuracy of 3D lines, allowing forms to change beyond their 3D representation, and just generally playing around with the forms and lines to create a unique look.
