By Mark Hatchard

abstract

The inspiration for the piece developed from an idea that has been evolving for the past four years, the initial catalyst being a book entitled ‘The Celestine Prophecy’, this looks at relationships between all things, in particular a persons perceptions of their surroundings. It was from this starting point I began to think about human interaction.

Initially looking for contextual grounding I related this to a relationship I was in at the time, from here it developed to more general thinking about emotional interaction; in particular the forces between two separate elements & how these elements may work as one. Here the difference between singular & joint existence is what intrigues me; how two separate beings or elements, each with their own individual perhaps conflicting desires may work contently as one.

The most concise method I’ve found to express the development of my thoughts on the subject has been visually. My initial conclusion was the two elements may work as figure 1, friction, each circle representing a separate element, the overlapping percentage of each working in harmony with the other, the remaining parts independent, therefore each keeping their individuality & the relationship from stagnating.
