For my Innovations Project I wanted not only to further my efforts in interactive programming, but to explore a field seemingly neglected by the NCCA -namely Two dimensional animation. In the present videogame indusry it is almost taken for granted that 3D graphics are a superior method of illustrating games. Common belief is that 2D games are a thing of the past- crude, embarassing prototypes to be forgotten and discarded in favour of present technology, and while this may be true for some types of game, it is quite wrong to make this opinion universal.
Admittedly they have been enhanced beyond recognition by the visually immersive nature of 3D presentation. Action/adventure games, driving games and flight simulators will never be the same since the 3D leap to a more convincing first person environment. Fighting games however, are still a strong exception from the rule that 3D is a superior graphics medium. My project intends to research why this is so and hopefully replicate some of the crucial elements in my own 2D game.
