Real-Time Volumetric Effects

By Guy Newbery

abstract

This report details the development of a volume effects system for the BACVA Yr 3 Innovations Project. The problems that were encountered, how they were overcome and the final results are written about over the next few pages. The project was undertaken with the intention of producing real time fire, smoke and fluid effects for a volume rendering engine that is being developed for the Major Project. The generation of the volumetric datasets (or cuberilles[ref 1]) that are used in this project were developed as part of the major project. The relevant code is contained in the file ‘voxelsIO.c,’ which should not be considered as part of the innovations project. Volume rendering is a method of representing a space a series of points and is explained in more detail later on. This report will also outline the potential applications of these effects and what benefits they would have over existing real time systems.
