In my original project proposal I stated that I wished to look into the possible uses of time-lapse photography in a digital environment, with a view to generating time-lapse sequences of places and events which do not exist in the real world. In modern film-making, where what we see on the screen can easily be completely computer generated, the ability to digitally recreate time-lapse in 3D environments could prove be very useful in the future. I intend to produce a computer generated animation sequence approximating real time-lapse photography, showing the passage of time in a 3D cityscape environment. I shall concentrate particularly on lighting changes throughout the day, demonstrating the passage of time, and the movement of traffic through the city. To aid in this, I shall also research traditional time-lapse and related areas of photography and computer graphics.
My inspiration for this project is purely aesthetic – I have seen many time-lapse sequences on television, and find them quite beautiful. I find time-lapsed night time cityscapes particularly attractive, which is why I wish to recreate this effect. Many sequences from the film Koyaanisquatsi are simply breathtaking.
