Scalable Interactive Renderer

Leigh Mcloughlin

featured project

Abstract:

Modern graphics hardware is capable of providing interactive frame rates for highly complex scenes. The results, however, are generally limited to the performance of one computer. By using distributed computing techniques, the power of a network of machines may be harnessed to produce greater results.
In this project, the 'Longbow 2.0' system is developed into a distributed rendering platform. This enables it to use multiple machines to perform heavy computation tasks such as global illumination. By separating the interactive frame rate from that of illumination updates, the presented system achieves frame rates of over 40 frames per second, for scenes of 83,000 vertices, and near-linear scaling of the rate of illumination updates.
