Metamorphosis in Animation

Abstract:
I have been researching the issue of metamorphosis; from an analytical perspective, in terms of what the significance its use in animation is, and how it is read by human observers; also of the techniques traditionally used in animation.
Because metamorphosis is a constant occurrence in my animation for transitions, I need a simple and efficient technique to produce a lot of these transitions quickly.
There are a number of shots in the animation, which require some kind of specific morph. These will require various different techniques to execute.
My goal as part of this research work was to produce one particular sequence from my Major project as a demonstration of the techniques I am using, and to further explore the possibilities for some of the other sequences. I also wanted to write a little about some of the research in to the area I've been doing.
The sequence I'm making represents the growth and evolution of a plant, which goes through a couple of stages. From concept work, I had a good idea of the end image in this sequence, of how I wanted the plant to grow and develop.
This report is divided up in to five sections:
1) A Discussion of Animation and Metamorphosis
2) Research in to Methods of Image Morphing.
3) The Desired Look of the Flower Growing.
4) The Methods Used
5) Analysis;
There are various sub headings and topics.
