Creating realistic Locomotion in the Animation of a Fantasy Creature

Jodie Azhar

featured project

Abstract:

Animation has always been interested in creating that which does not exist naturally within our
world. It allows us to turn our ideas and imaginings into moving visuals and give them a 'life' that
others can witness. With the advancements in computer graphics it is now easier to create 3D
models of creatures that are proportioned exactly to the real thing and imitate fur or skin or scales
through textures and paint effects. However, the life of the creature is breathed into it through the
animation.
This project will look into the problem of combining the locomotion of two existing creatures to
create a single animation of a fictional creature. For the purposes of the project I have focused on
animating a centaur â€" a mythical beast from Greek mythology comprised of the body of a horse,
with a human upper body replacing where the head would be.
