Pseudo Real Time Animation of Clouds

Mark Osborne

Abstract:

Clouds play an important role in producing realistic images of outdoor environments and have remained a challenge in the field of computer graphics for nearly twenty years due to their complex and extremely varied visual appearance. Simulating their formation is a difficult task due to the computationally expensive calculations required. This report outlines a simplified technique for simulating clouds using cellular automata and transition rules. Visualisation is achieved using the standard graphics API, OpenGL. The simulation also includes simple rendering and the effect wind has on the movement of clouds.
