Camera Matching Plug-in for Maya

Edward Cooper

Abstract:

My intention in the following paper is to produce a piece of software written in MEL script as a plug-in for Maya which will be a camera matching device and as an aid for computer animators to achieve a successful camera match between live action and CG before compositing so that all aspects are complimentary and the images when composited are visually convincing. If subject distance and spatial information is known it will be possible to position the camera and tilt in the correct direction.
When trying to calculate the above it would seem helpful to employ a secondary lateral reference that would pin point the camera position in relation to the subject matter.
When I started to think about writing the program there were various problems that were going to arise. But I intend to overcome these as I improve my knowledge of Maya's embedded scripting language MEL.
The user interface I originally thought would have to require a far larger amount of information from the user i.e. the x,y,z values for the two or maybe three objects needed to position the camera, but this was before I worked out the script requirements. Also keeping the needed values from the user down to a minimum makes the UI easier to use thus less opportunity for human error and also cuts the amount of coding, so making the script more efficient.
