An Investigation Into and Implementation of Automated Lip-Synchronisation Through Text-Based Input

Thomas Reed

featured project

Abstract:

Speech is the most obvious tenet of the human communication system. Every culture has devised some manner of orally conveying their intents, feelings and beliefs. It is little surprise therefore that speech, or dialogue, has come to form a large part in both film and animation. For animation, the present method of creating the complex motions used in speech production can be expensive, both financially, and in terms of human resources. It would be greatly beneficial for a project which involves any form of lip-synchronisation to have an automated approach to the process.
This project report describes the development of a computer program called MouthMover which receives a text input from the user and creates key-framed animation in an existing 3D animation package.
